Journalism will not flourish without ensuring freedom: Youth Minister

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof has stated journalism will not flourish without ensuring freedom for constructive criticism.

Addressing the Graduation Ceremony 2018 of Maldives Media Institute (MMI), Youth Minister Mahloof revealed while broadcasting was introduced to Maldives over 50 years ago, the sector has seen several notable developments. He noted the lack of training programmes during the period to develop human resource in the sector.

Noting training programmes provided by MMI will bring revolutionary changes to the broadcasting sector, Minister Mahloof called on the public to make the best use of the programmes introduced to Maldives by MMI. He further highlighted the importance of constructive criticism to develop the sector.

In 2018, MMI conducted 2 academic courses and 3 professional development courses.

MMI was established in 2015, Public Service Media (PSM) to develop human resource for the creative industry. In March 2017, PSM signed an agreement to provide courses offered by Malaysia's Limkokwing University at MMI, becoming the first ever media training institution in Maldives to conduct international level media courses.
