Chief Justice of Maldives Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has revealed an independent council needs to be established to oversee and monitor lawyers, as they need to be impartial.
Speaking at the oath taking ceremony of newly appointed lawyers held at the Supreme Court, the chief justice noted lawyers are regulated by Supreme Court until a bar association is formed in Maldives. Ahmed Abdulla Didi expressed hope the legal profession be further enhanced with the introduction of the bar association. Noting the legal sector has seen great progress in the recent past, he said lawyers can serve professionally when the sector become independent.
The chief justice also noted the importance of professional lawyers to ensure the rule of law is assured in Maldives, urging the lawyers to follow Islamic Sharia and the constitution of Maldives.
In the ceremony, 104 individuals took the lawyer's oath.
