President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated Maldives is further exploring windows for reconciliation with entities in the international community and remedying diplomatic ties that have been weakened. The president made the statement in his maiden presidential address.
Addressing the first sitting of the first session of parliament for this year, the president noted how isolated Maldives was in the international arena, when his administration assumed power. However, he noted the positive direction the foreign policy implemented by the administration has taken since then and said it has been met with acceptance and renewed friendships from the international community.
President Solih stressed Maldives has fulfilled and submitted for consideration the procedural prerequisites to re-join the Commonwealth; a union that has historically contributed heavily to the country's economic development and education.
The president vowed consular services available to Maldivians residing abroad, especially students, will be strengthened and said discussions are in motion to sign consular agreements with countries that are frequented by Maldivians and to facilitate smooth visa arrangements with European nations. He also revealed efforts on opening Maldivian embassies in South Africa, Washington and Russia are underway and a Consulate of the Maldives is to be established in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as well.
