President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed an initiative is underway to safeguard the basic human rights of prisoners in accordance with the United Nation's Mandela Rules.
Delivering his first presidential address since assuming office, President Solih firmly opposed the violation of inalienable basic human rights of prisoners. The president further stated he does not believe the sanctity of human life of prisoners must be violated.
Noting organised crimes and violence have significantly threatened the daily livelihood of Maldivians, President Solih highlighted necessary reforms are currently underway to ensure close provision of police protection required for the peaceful and contented life that Maldivians envision. He said under efforts to ensure peace in Maldives, neighbourhood police will be introduced and extended to the atolls this year.
Furthermore, President Solih expressed significant steps are to be taken to build the strength and competency of the defenders of national sovereignty, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The president noted the main goal is to sustain a military force of exemplary discipline equipped with modern skills assuring education and training opportunities to expand the military capabilities of the defence force. The president also highlighted the important role played by MNDF and Maldives Police Service to uphold independence, peace and harmony in the country.
Adding the role played by security forces in holding a free and fair presidential election, he recognised the actions they undertook to align with the people's decisions, in the execution of their sovereign duty to uphold democracy in the country.
