Price of staple foods to be standardised in April

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the price of staple foods would be reduced in outer islands from April onwards. The president made the statement while delivering the presidential address.

President Solih said the administration gives utmost precedence to providing equal services to all and therefore, staple foods will be available in all the islands at the same prices as in Male' from April onwards.

State Trading Organisation (STO) sells a kilogram of sugar and a kilogram of rice for USD 0.26, and a kilogram of flour for USD 0.19.

However, after being imported, stock taken to outer islands are not sold at the same rate. Currently, in accordance with the policies set by the Ministry of Economic Development, an amount between USD 0.0052 and USD 0.078 can be charged as labour and transportation cost.
