Maumoon submits papers to register a new political party

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has submitted papers to register a new political party. On behalf of the former president, the papers were submitted by Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan.

The former president has intensified efforts to form a new political movement after the Supreme Court declared the current leadership of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is legit. Since then, Maumoon has left PPM, which is led by his half-brother and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) has revealed if a political party is not registered by February 21, the candidates backed by Maumoon will compete in the parliamentary elections as independent candidates. MRM has decided to field 45 candidates for the parliamentary elections to be held on April 6.

Elections Commission has opened opportunity to submit documents to compete in the elections before February 21.
