Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has travelled to Malaysia on an invitation of the Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamed.
While former President Maumoon shares a close bond with Mahathir Mohamed, according to Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM), he will deliver a special letter from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Malaysian Prime Minister. The former president is scheduled to arrive back in Maldives on February 21 after meeting Mahathir Mohamed.
Maumoon and his son Faris Maumoon met with Mahathir late last year, while they were in Malaysia. Maumoon also met him on several occasions when he previously served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003.
Maumoon is accompanied by senior members of MRM, including Aminath Nadira and Abdulla Kamaaluddeen.
