Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has decided to endorse some candidates fielded by Jumhooree Party (JP), after dropping off from some constituencies previously contested by candidates from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC).
PSM News has learnt that Yameen had withdrawn tickets and support for some candidates fielded by PPM and PNC, urging those candidates to immediately halt the campaigns. The decision has come in the wake of rumours that JP, which is one of the parties that is part of the coalition government, has held discussions with Yameen regarding upcoming parliamentary elections.
JP held discussions with opposition leader, Yameen, following the primary elections held by the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), following its decision to complete for all the constituencies. MDP has announced it will field candidates for 86 constituencies in parliamentary elections to be held on April 6. The main ruling party left out just one constituency, as none of its members expressed interest to run for the constituency.
