First language Maldivian children acquire should be Dhivehi: Heritage Minister

Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon has urged to ensure that the first language Maldivian children acquire is Dhivehi language. The Heritage Minister made the statement, addressing the special function held at Dharubaaruge convention centre, to mark the International Mother Language Day.

Describing children as the future of the country, the minister said a better effort needs to be exerted to foster love for the Dhivehi language in the hearts of children. Noting children hesitate to prioritise Dhivehi language in communication, she said the way children and students perceive Dhivehi language needs to be changed.

The minister also stressed on the importance of making Dhivehi a tech-friendly language.
