Police structure causes challenges in protecting citizens: Acting Commissioner

Acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated he believes the structure of Maldives Police Service causes challenges in protecting and serving the citizens of a democratic environment.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Police Reform Symposium, acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said the service of the police must be further enhanced to meet the requirements of a democratic environment to protect the rights of citizens.

Noting the structure of the police force needs major reforms, acting commissioner expressed the changes, individuals need to empower. He added so far, efforts to gain trust of general public were not conducted accordingly which resulted in the public hating the police force.

Reforming the police service is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Under police reform programme, symposiums and meetings have been held for elderly citizens and small and medium sized businesses in Male' region. Moreover, symposiums were held in seven divisions of police service focused for government authorities in those areas. In addition, symposiums were held for police personal based across the country.
