Candidates given chance to include common names on ballots

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced candidates could include their common names on ballot papers, in addition to the full name, for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

It has been decided to allow candidates to request to write their common names on the ballots, according to the commission. This is the first time ECM is offering the chance for the candidates to include their common names on the ballots.

ECM has announced 393 candidates are contesting for 87 seats. The number of eligible voters stand at 265,581.

The parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
