Efforts underway to minimise congestion of Male' City harbours

Male' City Council has revealed efforts are underway to minimise congestion of Male' City harbours, by implementing easier arrangements for boats to harbour in the capital. The city council said allocating separate areas for different kinds of vessels are currently underway.

Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef said efforts are in progress to determine whether some vessels can be harboured in Villimale' and Hulhumale'. In this regard, Shamau revealed discussions are underway with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to allocate areas which boats can harbour in Hulhumale'.

Moreover, Shamau stated vessels anchored in the harbour for a long time, without any use, will be removed. Continuing on, Shamau expressed as part of the efforts to minimise the load on harbours, ferry operations to Hulhule' have been changed to Hulhumale' ferry terminal in the capital city. He highlighted the cruise terminal to be developed in Fishermen's Park is also conducted as part of the efforts to minimise difficulties faced in harbouring vessels.

The number of islanders visiting Male' have been on the increase, for various reasons such as medical and shopping for essentials. However, several challenges are faced in arriving to Male' via sea transportation.
