President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed presidential commissions were established as state institutions failed to investigate corruption and murder.
Addressing a ceremony held in Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih extensively spoke on the situation of corruption and theft in the country when he took office last November. Speaking in this regard, he said since the first day of his presidency, efforts have been exerted to fulfil the campaign pledge to investigate murders and enforced disappearances.
Moreover, the president noted granting legal powers to presidential commissions have been stopped by the parliament, adding such commissions were formed as the authorities legally mandated to carry out such tasks failed. He highlighted if the respective authorities executed their duties well, no presidential commissions would have been formed.
Furthermore, the president expressed although the parliament has refrained from granting powers, the commissions are functioning within the narrow opportunities and ensured results would be produced.
