President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated currently there are no political prisoners in Maldives. President Solih made the remarks at a campaign gathering held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Foakaidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll.

The president stated the administration has ensured and given back all the rights withheld by the past administration. He further highlighted most of the citizens were living in fear for a number of years before the presidential election held last September. In this regard, he said various rights ensured by the constitution were disregarded until the current administration took over last November. President Solih criticised the past administration, highlighting the corruption scandals and baseless rumours spread repeatedly to create chaos in the country.

Furthermore, the president noted in the past, if the political ideology was different from the main ruling party, such people were sent to prison after raising various charges. He said a government should be run free from corruption, with open minds and ensuring the rights of the people.
