Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef has explained women involvement in the upcoming parliamentary elections and the challenges faced by the administration in enforcing the Gender Equality Act, to a visiting European Union elections expert mission.
During the meeting, Gender Minister Shidhatha noted the number of women competing in the parliamentary elections is considerably low and the number has not been increasing from election to election. The minister highlighted the chance of most female candidates getting elected to the parliament is also low. She added the importance of affirmative action in ensuring more women are elected to the parliament and increase the involvement of women.
The gender minister also revealed the efforts of the administration to solve the obstacles faced by women in political and economic activities.
