China to handover 7,000 housing units by end of the year

Embassy of China in Maldives has revealed the 7,000 housing units developed in Hulhumale' will be handed over to the government before the end of the year, after bringing the infrastructural changes required by the government.

Speaking to media regarding the ongoing projects conducted by China in Maldives, First Secretary at Chinese Embassy said the structure of the 16 housing towers have been completed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. In this regard, the first secretary revealed works of the 25-storey buildings are ongoing at a fast pace according to the new design given by the government.

Under the social housing project, 1-room and 2-room apartments are developed. However, realising the apartments are smaller in size and cannot accommodate a family, the government decided to alter the design of the unfinished flats to increase the number of rooms. While the works of the housing units were begun on 2017, the then contractor said the project will be concluded by June.

Speaking with PSM News, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development revealed the completed flats are also undergoing changes to enable spacious apartments. The government has extended the deadline for the project until November to adapt to the new designs.
