A system to be established to enhance government transactions

Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal has stated it is an aim to establish an easily accessible system to enhance the speed of the transactions made within the government. The communication minister made the statement at the national address coinciding with World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

Every year May 17 is marked at World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD). The purpose of WTISD is to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Coinciding with the day, Minister Maleeh said the aim of celebrating such a day in Maldives is to celebrate the achievements made by the country in the sector and to celebrate the human resource of the sector. Noting Maldives despite being a small country has made tremendous achievements in sector, the minister expressed utilisation of technological services increase day by day. In this regard, he highlighted all sectors are dependent on the technology whether a school, health facility, business or other platforms.

Furthermore, the communication minister advised to protect the technological facilities and to make the best use of the facilities. He further noted providing internet as a necessity is in the pipeline.

17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which has been celebrated annually since 1969.
