President pledges support for Afeef's nomination as Speaker

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged support for the nomination of Hassan Afeef as the Speaker of the new parliament. The president made the statement while speaking with the press after a gathering held with members of the outgoing parliament and incoming parliament.

Stating it would not be prudent to name candidates when it comes to whom he think would be best for the position, the president said he has worked with both Mohamed Aslam and Hassan Afeef, noting the latter seems to be the best fit for the post of Speaker of Parliament.

While President Solih maintained Afeef would be the best candidate for the coveted post of speaker, former President and Parliamentarian-Elect Mohamed Nasheed has stated that Aslam would be the better fit for the position. In addition to Aslam and Afeef, Parliamentarians Abdulla Jabir, Rozaina Adam, Ibrahim Shareef and Ali Azim have also expressed interest for the position.

A Parliament Speaker would be elected in the first sitting of the first session of the 19th Parliament scheduled to be held next Tuesday.
