National Development Plan to be opened for public suggestions

Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure has revealed the national development plan will be opened for public suggestions.

While it has been more than six months since the new administration assumed office, it has faced criticism for not launching enough development projects. The opposition criticised the new administration for continuing and completing the projects launched by the previous administration.

About USD 458,000 was spent on Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects, although USD 4.51 million was allocated in the state budget, according to statistics published by Ministry of Finance. The previous administration conducted a record number of development projects. However, with each project, several corruption allegations and various complaints of poor quality of the project were raised.

The national development plan is compiled by Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure and President's Office. The planning ministry revealed necessary surveying has been concluded now. An official working in compiling the national development plan said the former administration conducted plans without proper planning, adding once the national development plan is compiled, the development of the country will be much easier and effective.

The national development plan will include a vision of Maldives for the next five years. The plan includes economic development, social development, housing, gender and community, infrastructure, environment and communication as well as governance.

The planning ministry stated the plan, once drafted, will be published for public suggestions before finalising.
