Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed plans are underway to enhance its ferry fleet to improve atoll ferry services. MTCC currently operates ferry services to 15 atolls.
Speaking to PSM News, Senior Manager of Transport Service Department Ibrahim Siraj said efforts are underway to repair ferries as part of the bid to improve services to the atolls. Siraj stated MTCC utilises ferries with 210-255 horse power engines for the services in the atolls, adding however, the ferries are not the best suitable option. In this regard, he added a bid has been announced to rent 14 ferries for the operations of ferry services in 11 atolls.
Furthermore, Ibrahim Siraj said ferry services provided in Meemu Atoll, Faafu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll have been temporarily stopped. He highlighted discussions are underway to recommence the operations.
While MTCC is the biggest transport company in Maldives, it provides ferry services to 15 islands with a fleet of 35 ferries including 13 backup ferries.
