Parliament of Maldives has passed to reduce the number of members appointed by the president to the Council of Maldives National University (MNU).
The amendment to the National University Act was passed by votes from 65 parliamentarians. The MNU Council comprises of 13 members, with 9 members appointed by the president. The president will only appoint the chancellor of MNU, with all other appointments including the vice chancellor to be appointed by the council, according to the latest amendment.
Furthermore, the amendment states the duration of the terms of the chancellor and vice chancellor will be 5 years, although the council will decide on the term of the deputy chancellor and other appointments.
