National Institute of Education (NIE) has said preparations are underway to launch a research to determine the implementation of the new national curriculum.
The research comes as parts of the efforts to review and revise the new national curriculum launched in 2015, according to NIE. Until 2014, the curriculum used in the Maldivian schools was compiled and implemented in 1982.
After bringing amendments to the curriculum, a new version was launched and implemented in 2015. The new curriculum focuses on improving students to meet the latest technologies and developments as well as to develop talents.
The national curriculum envisions development of successful individuals who are motivated to explore and create knowledge, confident and competent individuals who have a firm belief in Islam, a strong sense of self and national identity and responsible and productive contributors to their own family, local community and the global society.
Speaking to PSM News, acting Head of NIE Curriculum Department Ahmed Rafeeu highlighted there are several challenges in implementing the curriculum although the curriculum is being implemented for different key stages. He noted teachers are not familiar with the new curriculum.
Furthermore, Rafeeu revealed efforts are underway to research the implementation of the new curriculum in schools, revealing research will be done with assistance from Cambridge Assessment International Education. He expressed selected schools from all parts of the country will be visited and inquired on the curriculum, adding at the same time, information relevant to develop human resources will also be collected.
NIE said the research will focus on the implementation of the curriculum in pre-school and grades 1, 2 and 3. Moreover, during the research process, teachers, school managements and members of Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) will be interviewed, according to NIE.
