Fish exports from Maldives decrease in 2019

Fish exports from Maldives have decreased in the first 6 months of the year. While 32,000 metric tonnes of fish were exported in the first six months, most exported products were fresh and frozen Skipjack Tuna, according to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Statistics from MMA showed fish exports in the first 6 months of the year decreased 0.5% compared to the same period of last year. Last year, 33,000 metric tonnes of fish were exported in the first 6 months. In the first 6 months of this year, 17.2 metric tonnes of Skipjack Tuna were exported which is a decrease of 3.3% compared to the 20 metric tonnes exported in the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, the second most exports were Yellowfin Tuna products which was recorded 9.5 metric tonnes, which is an increase of 7.3 metric tonnes compared with the same period of last year. Moreover, export of reef fishes and other fish products decreased in the first 6 months of the year.

However, the number of processed fish in the form of can and packets exported increased 29 percent compared to the first 6 months of last year.
