Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef has stated narcotics abuse breeds social problems and crime in the society.
Speaking at opening ceremony of the workshop organised by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Minister Shidhatha said drug abuse deteriorates health of the youth and causes psychological problems. The workshop named South-Asian Booster Training on the UNODC Family Therapy Package for Youth with Drug Use Disorders and their Families is to be held until September 27.
Minister Shidhatha noted the society is experiencing a void for not obtaining youth participation in development and rehabilitation is needed to cure victims of drug abuse. She said drug rehabilitation centres are currently operated in three regions in the country and government policy is to allow private parties to operate rehabilitation centres as more people require such services.
