National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed the fire that originated in a chemical storage facility in Male' City last September yielded losses amounting to USD 2.3 million.
Speaking at a press conference on the latest efforts to assist fire victims, CEO of NDMA Hisaan Hassan said 141 people from 31 families are still under state care, of which 7 families own the buildings that were destroyed in the fire. Hisaan said the remaining 24 families are currently living in Mookai Suites and Gaakoshi Flats. He further said the state has compensated them with the rental amounts for three months.
NDMA also said no family had been removed from temporary shelters by force nor had the state ignored any family affected in the fire without a shelter. With the provision of three-month rental, the families have now been instructed to return to normal state of affairs after getting their rental residences.
Deputy CEO of NDMA Umar Fikry said the state provisions had been just towards all families affected in the fire as the victims have been offered over USD 97,000 in rental compensations. He further said the fire relief fund opened by NDMA received USD 161,000in addition to contributions from Zakat Fund.
The government decided to compensate for the rental of three months for families affected in the tragic fire in the capital city on September 20. NDMA is currently evaluating the total loss in damages in the fire after thorough assessments to identify damages to buildings and loss off household items.
