New ophthalmology centre treats over 1,000 patients in the opening week

Hulhumale’ Hospital has revealed over a thousand patients sought treatment from the newly developed ophthalmology centre within the first week of opening.

The centre, which is named Dr. N. D. Abdul Hakeem Ophthalmology Centre, was inaugurated at Hulhumale’ Hospital on January 13 by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The hospital said 1,097 patients sought treatment from the centre within the first week, adding surgeries have been conducted on 89 individuals. The hospital added the centre serves an average of 150 patients on a daily basis, while 1,070 individuals are currently on the waiting list.

The centre was developed under the aid of the Government of China. Five Chinese doctors and one Egyptian doctor provides consultation services in the centre. The services of the centre will also be provided through public camps.

The centre was established under the agreement signed between the Ministry of Health of Maldives and the Health Commission of China in July 2019.
