President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed a masterplan to develop a transshipment port in Gulhifalhu, Kaafu Atoll will be completed this year. The president made the remarks while delivering the presidential address at the Parliament of Maldives.
Delivering the address, President Solih said the masterplan to develop a transshipment port in Gulhifalhu will be completed and the development project launched this year. The president noted the port will feature state of the art facilities, equipped to cater to 400,000 shipping containers on average per year. He said feasibility tests and necessary surveys to construct a bridge from Malé City to Thilafushi are ongoing, with proposed designs currently under consideration.
The administration has decided to establish a transshipment port in Gulhifalhu to avoid the negative impact on the economy due to issues faced by lack of harbour space and facilities at Male' Commercial Harbour. Experts believe international standard harbors developed in north and south of Maldives will also bring positive changes to the economy of Maldives. In addition, the ports are believed to enhance transport and logistics sector as well.
