The Government of Maldives has evacuated the remaining two Maldivians in Wuhan City, China and transferred them to a quarantine facility in India.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed the two Maldivians in Wuhan City, the epicenter of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, have been evacuated and quarantined in India as per the precautionary measures followed by Maldives. The foreign ministry said the two Maldivians will be kept in the quarantine facility for a period of 14 days. The two individuals were carried to New Delhi aboard an Indian Air Force military plane with 76 Indian nationals and 23 individuals from other countries.
There were a total of 9 Maldivians when coronavirus began spreading in Wuhan City. 7 of the 9 Maldivians were brought to India on February 2, 2020 and have now been brought back to Maldives following the conclusion of the quarantine period.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian Ambassador to Maldives Sunjay Sudhir, Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Zhang Lizhong and Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Misri and the Indian Air Force for their role in the evacuation.
