Coastal protection project of Rasdhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll has begun with financial assistance from the Government of India. The project worth over USD 858,000 was inaugurated by Ambassador from India to Maldives Sanjay Sudhir.
Speaking at the function, Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam said the ministry has been working on the project for quite a while, stating the final drawings have been finalised with suggestions from the island community. The minister said the project has been designed to minimise impact and in an approach that does not alter the natural environment of the island. He said the project will protect and preserve the local tourism business, adding the project is economically beneficial as Rasdhoo has around 500 beds.
Speaking at the function, Ambassador Sudhir said India is expanding its assistance to all islands in the nation while also working to offer more support to run economic activities that directly benefits the residents.
The project was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). As part of the project, groynes will be constructed to a length of 324 metres, while a 29 metre revetment will also be installed. Meanwhile, 6,563 cubic metres of sand will be pumped to fill the eroded area.
The coastal protection project will be run under grant assistance from the government of India and under the PSIP budget of Maldives. The project is expected to cost USD 858,365 of which USD 516,310 is funded by India.
MTCC was awarded the project in September 2019 and the company expects to complete the work in the next three months.
