37 individuals denied entry to Maldives following screening process

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated 37 individuals have been denied entry to Maldives after being screened for COVID-19 at international airports or seaports.

Speaking at the Parliament of Maldives on the situation of COVID-19 in Maldives, Health Minister Ameen stated stringent measures have been taken by the administration since the global outbreak of COVID-19 was reported. Noting screening facilities were established in all international airports and seaports in Maldives, the health minister revealed 204,749 people were screened between February 1 and March 7, while 717 of them were taken for further questioning. He revealed 37 individuals were denied entry following the screening process.

Speaking about the efforts of the administration to disseminate information regarding COVID-19 to the public, the health minister noted 2,233 people have clarified information regarding the virus through the special call centre established following the global outbreak. In addition, he revealed 81,178 people were provided information on the virus through various awareness programmes conducted by the ministry.

Health Minister Ameen added the administration began efforts against COVID-19 as early as January 6, when a risk assessment was commenced. The minister stated the risk assessment was completed on January 12, while the national response guideline was prepared on January 20. He also stated the health emergency coordination committee was formed on January 21, while thermal cameras were installed at Velana International Airport (VIA) on January 22 to screen inbound passengers.

Speaking on the measures taken by the administration against COVID-19 that impacts the economy, Health Minister Ameen stated all such decisions have been taken after consulting financial authorities and senior officials of the tourism sector. The minister said top priority is placed on the health and safety of Maldivians, adding the decisions were taken based on the consultation from financial authorities and senior officials of the tourism sector.

While six cases of COVID-19 have been found in Maldives, the administration has been strengthening efforts to contain the spread of the disease. The health minister assured all measures taken by the government are taken after considering the well-being of all Maldivian citizens.
