Funds to be released under government scholarships and loans despite shutdown

Ministry of Higher Education has stated funds will be released to students who are studying under government scholarships or loans, despite the shutdown of government operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The higher education ministry stated, despite the shutdown of government operations, there will be no interruption in issuing funds for students registered under higher education loan schemes, scholarships and the free first-degree programme. The ministry said the funds will be released in accordance with the allocated schedules.

The higher education ministry stated funds were released to 1,148 students under the free first-degree programme last week alone. The ministry stated each student registered under the programme will receive funds twice every academic year. The ministry added efforts are underway to establish an online portal to allow students to view the details of funds released.

The free first-degree programme was launched last year under the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Over 6,000 students are studying under the programme.
