Additional 15 COVID-19 cases detected in the Maldives

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed an additional 15 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 in Male' City.

HPA said 9 Maldivians and 6 foreigners tested positive for COVID-19 on April 20 in Male' City, raising the number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives to 67. In total 47 individuals, including 24 Maldivians and 23 foreigners, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Male' City. The 23 foreigners include 17 individuals from Bangladesh and 6 from India.

Meanwhile, HPA said samples from a Maldivian national in Uligamu, Haa Alifu Atoll also tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first case identified from an island outside Male' City. Prior to the outbreak in the capital city, 20 COVID-19 cases were reported from resorts, safaris, and individuals who have travelled to the Maldives from abroad and are undergoing the 14-day mandatory quarantine period.

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) said 49 patients are undergoing treatment in the Maldives, while 2 foreigners who contracted COVID-19 while in the Maldives are undergoing treatment abroad. In total, 16 patients have fully recovered from COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez revealed 4,139 samples have been collected, of which 3,834 samples tested negative. He added 238 samples are pending results.
