National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has projected a total of 77,305 people to contract COVID-19 in the Maldives.
Speaking at the daily press briefing held at the NEOC, Dr. Sheena Moosa stated 13,568 are expected to be admitted in hospitals with 5,805 requiring treatments in intensive care units if the numbers increase as per the current projections. She said the numbers indicate the projection of figures despite the lockdown enforced in the Greater Male' Region. She further pointed the testing capacity of the country is still relatively low.
The projections indicate although 392 cases are expected to be detected as confirmed cases on May 31, which is expected to be the peak day in the Maldives, the actual figures of people who test positive could be around 1,562. The doctor said the testing strategy must be changed to reduce the numbers.
The revised projections of NEOC reveal the number of possible cases in the Maldives will be reduced following the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. Initially, the projections of NEOC had shown the Maldives may confirm 6,804 cases on its peak day.
