Fifth COVID-19 death reported in the Maldives

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has reported a fifth death from COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez revealed a 45-year-old Bangladeshi man was brought to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after collapsing on a street in Male’ City. Noting the individual was already dead when brought to IGMH, the spokesperson said the sample obtained from his body tested positive for COVID-19. The spokesperson added the individual’s medical history revealed he had a heart condition.

With the latest death, the number of confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Maldives has risen to 5. Previously, an 83-year-old Maldivian woman, an 88-year-old Maldivian man, an 80-year-old Maldivian man and a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man had died from COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, an additional 43 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on May 26, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,438. On the other hand, the number of recoveries has risen to 232. NEOC revealed 1,817 individuals are currently in quarantine facilities, while 1,108 individuals are in isolation facilities.
