The lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region has been extended to another two weeks, albeit with eased restrictions.
Male’ has been under lockdown since April 15, upon the detection of a community spread of COVID-19 in the capital. The latest extension of the full lockdown was due to expire on May 28. However, the government has decided to extend the lockdown for a further two weeks, although some restrictions have been eased as the spread of COVID-19 has slowed down in recent weeks.
During the extended lockdown, movement of people and vehicles in and between Male’, Villimale’, Hulhumale’, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu would still be restricted. However, more permits will be issued for individuals going out on essential needs, while individuals over the age of 60 are allowed to head outdoors between 0500hrs and 0800hrs every day, after seeking a police permit. They are allowed to be accompanied by one person.
Meanwhile, more permits will also be issued for taxi services to operate within the city. Permits will also be issued for cargo vessels travelling between Male’ and Thilafushi. Individuals working in industrial zones will be allowed to commute from home to work and vice versa.
Furthermore, shops and private offices can be opened under the instructions of Ministry of Economic Development. Construction work can be carried out in Male’ upon permission of Male’ City Council and in Hulhumale’ upon permission of Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
During the extended lockdown period, banking services can be increased according to a policy set by the respective bank. Healthcare services and other public services would also be increased during this period.
Permits for individuals going out on essential purposes will be issued by Maldives Police Service (MPS). Security forces, healthcare workers and individuals who hold a pass of National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) will be exempted from the lockdown restrictions.
While the first phase of easing restrictions began on May 28, NEOC has stated any further changes to the lockdown restrictions will be made based on the changing situation of COVID-19.
