Second COVID-19 peak unlikely to exceed first peak: NEOC

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated a second peak of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives is unlikely to exceed the first peak.

Speaking at a press conference held at the NEOC, Epidemiologist at Health Protection Agency (HPA) Dr. Ibrahim Afzal said a second COVID-19 outbreak is unlikely to hit back to the first peak experienced in the Maldives, as the public is now more aware of the disease and is taking the necessary safety measures. As such, the doctor noted people are rarely seen outside without a mask in the Greater Male' Region, while physical distancing measures are imposed in most places. He especially noted the high level of precautions taken by expatriate workers, who represent the largest percentage of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.

The epidemiologist said the chances of a second peak exceeding the first peak is low as the transmission risks have been reduced. He said although cases continue to be detected every day, another lockdown would not be necessary if the situation remains under control. He added another projection would be made after monitoring the COVID-19 situation for two weeks.
