MTCC completes land reclamation of Maafushi

1

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the reclamation component of the land reclamation and shore protection project in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The land reclamation and shore protection project in Maafushi is a key electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. As part of the project, MTCC reclaimed a detached separate island connected to the main island via a causeway. MTCC said the reclamation introduced more beach areas to bring a solution to the high demand of residential plots on the island.

The project was awarded to MTCC by the government on August 27, last year. Under the project, MTCC has reclaimed 25 hectares of land, while a 1,110-metre revetment would be constructed around the reclaimed area as shore protection. The total cost of the project amounts to over USD 6.4 million.

Maafushi is renowed as the origin of local tourism in the Maldives, evident from the guest houses, souvenir shops, water sport centres all around the island. With over 50 active guest houses in the island, the tourist bed capacity of Maafushi currently exeeds 1,600.
