Over 1,000 people fined for violating HPA guidelines

Maldives Police Services (MPS) has revealed over 1,000 individuals have been fined for violating the guidelines published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Speaking at a news conference held at the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) Chief Inspector of Police Abdul Matheen Abdul Kareem said MPS has increased patrolling in Male City to ensure the guidelines are followed closely. Matheen said the police have cautioned 189 and fined another 591 individuals for not wearing masks in public. He stated although the number of people going outside during the curfew hours has been decreasing, the people who violate the guidelines usually gather outside in crowds more than five and they do so during the non-curfew hours.

MPS has increased monitoring of compliance to HPA measures, following an influx of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks. MPS called on the public to take individual responsibility in ensuring the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country is controlled.
