Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated no repeat infections of COVID-19 have been reported so far in the Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Moosa Murad from the Clinical Management Department of HEOC said repeat infections of COVID-19 are quite rare, even in the global scale. He said there have been only 5 confirmed cases in the world where a recovered patient contracted COVID-19 again.
Dr. Murad said antibodies are present in the body of recovered COVID-19 patients for a long period of time, adding it is very unlikely that a recovered patient could be infected again within 3 months of recovery. Noting the research on COVID-19 is still ongoing, the doctor said more information on the disease will be available with the progress in research.
Over 28 million people have contracted COVID-19 around the world, while more than 900,000 people have died from the disease. The Maldives has reported 8,834 cases and 31 deaths.
