58 MNDF officers in Gan test positive for COVID-19

58 officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) who travelled to Gan, Laamu Atoll for a training programme have tested positive for COVID-19.

A total of 93 MNDF personnel had travelled to Gan on September 19 for the training programme and were undergoing quarantine at a camp site located away from residential areas. 58 officers returned positive COVID-19 test results from the exit samples taken upon the end of the quarantine period.

Gan Hospital stated it is providing medical assistance for the MNDF personnel that tested positive for COVID-19. As such, the hospital said individuals needing medical assistance have been brought to the hospital for treatment. However, the hospital said no patients have been admitted in the COVID-19 medical facility established in the island.

Meanwhile, MNDF said further measures have been taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the campsite. In this regard, MNDF said symptomatic and non-symptomatic individuals have been separated in the campsite.

In addition to the MNDF officers, a 20-year old male who was undergoing home quarantine in Gan after travelling from Male’ City has also tested positive for COVID-19. The island had previously reported two COVID-19 cases.
