Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated the seroprevalance study launched in the Greater Male’ Region is important for determination of the required control measures in relation to the spread of COVID-19.
Speaking to PSM News, HPA Consultant Dr. Sheena Moosa said the seroprevalance study is not simply just another study to determine the presence of the COVID-19 virus in the body. Dr. Sheena noted the study aims to determine how much the whole community has been exposed to the virus, and identify the level of immunity among individuals. She said the study is conducted to ensure the safety of the whole community, rather than individuals.
Speaking further, Dr. Sheena noted the study is crucial to determine the required measures to control the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. Dr. Sheena added the results of the study would play a major role in any decisions taken on easing or adding restrictions. Noting a large sample size is needed to ensure the scientific validity of the study, the doctor requested for the support and cooperation of the public for the study.
The antibody testing under the seroprevalence study is being done collectively by HPA and Maldives National University (MNU). During the first round of the study, blood samples were obtained from children aged under the age of 18. The study is currently in its second round, with blood samples taken from selected individuals who are notified via text message.
Four locations have been allocated in the Greater Male’ Region to obtain samples for the study. As such, sampling is carried out in the MNU Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Education in Male’, as well as Hulhumale’ Gems Preschool and Villimale’ Hospital. Sampling is carried out every day from 1600hrs to 1900hrs.
