Two new COVID-19 cases detected in Eydhafushi

Two new cases of COVID-19 have been detected from Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll.

Baa Atoll Hospital revealed a married couple who had travelled to Eydhafushi from Male’ tested positive on December 4, upon conclusion of their 14-day home quarantine period. The hospital said the couple had travelled with their one-month old baby, although the baby has not shown any symptoms of COVID-19. However, the hospital said the baby will be closely monitored.

With the two new cases, a total of 14 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Eydhafushi, all of whom had been undergoing home quarantine after travelling to the island. Apart from the two new cases, all others have made a fully recovery.

As per the statistics of Health Protection Agency (HPA), 37 new cases were reported across the Maldives on December 4. There are currently 890 active cases in the country, including 78 patients who have been hospitalised.

A total of 13,143 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Maldives since the disease was detected in the country on March 7. 12,199 individuals have made a full recovery, while 47 individuals have passed away from the disease. COVID-19 deaths in the Maldives include 39 locals and 8 expatriates.

HPA has recently decided to shorten the mandatory quarantine period for individuals travelling from Male’ or resorts to inhabited islands as well as individuals returning to the Maldives from abroad. As such, the quarantine period for travelers has been set as 10 days, effective from December 4. However, individuals who are isolated after becoming direct contacts of a positive case would still be required to undergo quarantine for 14 days.

HPA has also made masks mandatory in all inhabited islands of the Maldives. HPA stated masks must be worn in public by all in inhabited islands and airports. HPA has also instructed to maintain a minimum distance of 3 feet with others when in public.
