Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has revealed the development of the police academy in Addu City is expected to be completed by March 2021.
Speaking to the press after visiting the development site, the Police Commissioner said the academy will be developed as a training institute owned by Maldives Police Service (MPS), noting it will not be a military facility. He said the academy will be equipped with classrooms, an outdoor drill square and some open spaces for physical training exercises. He revealed the academy will be named as the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement.
Speaking on the progress of development, Commissioner Hameed revealed about 70% of construction has now been completed. He said the project is expected to be completed by March 2021.
The National College of Policing and Law Enforcement is being developed to cater to a capacity of 340 students. The academy will be equipped with medical, sports and physical training facilities, including a gymnasium and 400-meter running track. The academy will also have a helipad to land helicopters.
The development of the police academy was initially scheduled to be completed by July this year. However, the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project is expected to cost about USD 40 million upon completion.
