Total number of COVID-19 cases reported in Maldives exceeds 14,000

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has exceeded 14,000.

According to the latest case update released by HPA, 52 new cases were reported between 1800hrs on January 7 and 1800hrs on January 8. This includes 11 cases from the Greater Male’ Region, 6 cases from inhabited islands, 34 cases from operational resorts and 1 case from a liveaboard.

With the latest update, the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has risen to 14,040. This includes 705 active cases, 13,279 recovered cases and 49 deaths. There are currently 41 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals or medical facilities.

HPA further revealed 2,568 samples had been obtained for testing within the past 24 hours. A total of 336,381 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the Maldives.

COVID-19 was first detected in the Maldives on March 7 last year, when a tourist from Kuredu Island Resort tested positive for the disease. The first case in the Male’ Region was reported on April 15. Since then, the majority of cases have been identified from the Male’ Region.
