Ministry of Tourism has revealed 50% of all guesthouses registered in the Maldives have been permitted to resume operations.
The tourism ministry permitted guesthouses in the atolls to reopen on October 15, nearly 7 months after guesthouse operations were suspended due to COVID-19. Guesthouses in the Greater Male’ Region were permitted to reopen on December 14.
As per the latest statistics of the tourism ministry, 293 of the 580 registered guesthouses in the Maldives have been permitted to reopen upon submission of the Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) in line with health and safety guidelines. This includes 42 guesthouses in the Male’ Region, bringing 1,186 tourist beds into operation in the capital.
Meanwhile, guesthouses in 48 islands across 14 atolls have been permitted to resume operations. Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll has the highest number of operational guesthouses, with 29 guesthouses currently active in the island.
With the reopening of 293 guesthouses in the Maldives, there are now over 5,500 tourist beds in operation in guesthouses across the Maldives.
