Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into local companies importing fruits and vegetables without paying overseas suppliers.
MPS said an investigation has been launched by its Economic Crime Department and Intelligence to identify locals bringing in fruits and vegetables without paying overseas suppliers, and selling them cheaply in the Maldives. MPS said 10 such cases were submitted to the police last year, while an additional case has been submitted this month. MPS said a special operation was carried out on January 16, where two houses, three apartments and an office were inspected, noting evidence was collected from these locations.
MPS has called on businesses not to import items to the Maldives without paying overseas suppliers, as it affects trade relations and the economy of the Maldives. They also called on the public not to buy items which are suspiciously cheap and to report any businesses selling such items.
