Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated the new tour operator law to be introduced in the Maldives will provide protection for local tour operators and agencies amid international competition.
Speaking at the inauguration of the seminar held to formulate a special law for tour operators and agencies, Minister Mausoom said travel agents make up a crucial component of the tourism industry. Noting one of the major challenges faced by travel agents is the lack of security and protection amid global competition, the minister said the new law will help to protect local tour operators and agencies by providing them with special benefits of local residency. He said protecting local tour operators and agencies will also be beneficial for the local economy.
The minister further expressed hope that the new law will help to retain more foreign currency in the Maldives. He added the new law will facilitate a free and fair, competitive environment for businesses in the industry.
In his remarks, the tourism minister thanked the Parliament for the initiative to conduct a seminar on formulating a new law for tour operators and agencies. He expressed hope the seminar will help to resolve currently faced issues and strengthen the tourism industry.
