Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated it aims to complete the construction of Faresmaathoda Airport by November 11 this year.
Speaking to PSM News, MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim said the project is well underway, with ground preparation for runway base layers currently ongoing. Azim said the project will be the fastest airport development project to be completed by MTCC. He said the company is aiming to complete the project within 8 months and hand over the airport by November 11.
Faresmaathoda Airport is being developed upon reclamation of several small islands in the lagoon to create a sufficient land area for the airport. A total of 19.9 hectares of land have been reclaimed for the airport, with an 888-metre rock boulder revetment protecting the shoreline of the reclaimed area.
Although land reclamation and shore protection was completed in 2019, airport development was not contracted until November last year. The airport development project includes construction of a 1,200-metre runway, taxiway, apron and service roads. The total cost of the project is USD 9.4 million.
