President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed projects to install solar power systems in 13 islands of Raa Atoll will commence this year.
Speaking at an event held for the people of Raa Atoll as part of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign for the upcoming local council elections, President Solih revealed 3.9 MW solar panels will be installed in 13 islands of Raa Atoll this year. He noted the projects will be opened for tender this month.
Elaborating on the projects, President Solih said 400 kW solar panels will be installed in Alifushi and Maduvvari, turning 85% of power generated at peak load to renewable energy. The President also revealed 450 kW solar panels will be installed in Meedhoo, turning 79% of power generated at peak load to renewable energy. He added 350 kW solar panels will be installed in Innamaadhoo and Inguraidhoo, completing a full transition to renewable energy in the two islands.
As part of the renewable energy transition projects conducted by the administration, 2.86 MW solar panels were installed across 26 islands last year. The administration has revealed solar power systems will be established in another 61 islands this year, producing 36 MW of power through solar energy.
The administration states rate of solar power generation in the Maldives has increased three-fold in the past two years. The administration states annual carbon dioxide emission has decreased by 72,871 tonnes, while USD 9.6 million can now be saved annually from fuel expenses.
