Ministry of Environment has placed 104 species of birds under protection in accordance with the Environment Protection and Preservation Act.
The environment ministry stated that 104 bird species have been placed under protection in accordance to Article 4 of the environment protection act. The ministry has publicised a list of names of the bird species, which includes birds native to Maldives as well as migratory birds. The list includes three species of pigeons as well as owls and eagles.
The ministry stated the migratory birds seasonally travel to Maldives and they are crucial for the country's ecosystem. The ministry highlighted the purpose is to halt actions that damage the environment, adding the ministry also wish to make Maldives a safe haven for birds. The ministry highlighted it is illegal to kill, poach, or cage any protected species as well as damage their habitats, as well as advertising protected species and their habitats.
The Government of Maldives began implementing laws protecting animals in February, which includes establishing a management plan, and publicising a list of endangered species for the relevant authorities. The government has also begun registering refuge areas and publicising penalties for illegal activities. Those found guilty of abuse of protected animals or damaging their habitats will be penalised by around USD 2,000.
